Magnezit Group launches a new workshop for periclase-carbon bricks production at Slovmag

Magnezit Group put into operation a new workshop with capacity 32 000 tpy designed to produce periclase-carbon bricks on carbores and resin binder according to hot technique of mass preparation and forming at Slovmag plant (Lubenik, Slovakia). As a result, Slovmag’s capacities have increased more than 6 times, earlier the company produced up to 5000 tpy of periclase-carbon bricks only on resin binder. Investments in the project made up 7 mln. euro.

Periclase-carbon bricks are one of the most popular refractory products which are used to line main vessels of steel-smelters including converters, electric furnaces and steel ladles. Renovation and modernization works of Slovmag equipment were performed according to the development strategy of Magnezit Group aimed at production the most prospective products as well as strengthening Magnezit’s position at European markets. Close location of the company to its consumers accelerates deliveries and cooperation decreasing non-effective expenses of both parties.

Addition of carbores (special synthetic binder) increases thermal resistance, slag and metal resistance of periclase-carbon bricks, therefore performance life of heating unit’s linings is also prolonged. Under the project a unique kiln having a capacity of 20 thous. tpy for thermal treatment of carbores-containing periclase-carbon bricks was installed. The kiln is equipped with devices of indirect air heating that allow thermal treatment of bricks at 300 °Ñ and 200 °Ñ and eliminate all exhaust gases formed during thermal treatment in the afterburner. PDI Teplotehna together with contractors – German companies John Zink KEU GmbH, Seibold and Weishaupt were involved in the furnace installation.

A new production line also includes an original pneumatic transportation of granular materials to the bunkers, a heating system of initial powders and hot mixing of components with subsequent forming of bricks and a programmed control robot to remove the bricks from the press and set green material on stacks for further thermal treatment in a tunnel dryer. Technological process control is automated. Six people of staff in a shift operate the production process.

As for today the first pilot batch of periclase-carbon bricks on carbores for 180t-steel-teeming ladles has been successfully produced. It will be dispatched to Slovak and German companies “The first results of trials prove that the whole technological chain works without interruptions and quality of produced bricks corresponds to the required parameters”, said Lubomir Vaskovich, Deputy General Director.

Slovmag, the biggest refractory manufacturer in Eastern Europe, was affiliated with Magnezit Group in 2008. The plant manufactures products based on its own raw materials and high-quality refractories with MgO content not less than 97% produced by Magnezit Group on the basis of high-quality materials mined at magnesite deposits in Russia.

Magnezit Group is a world’s leading manufacturer of magnesia products. It is an integrated company that provides a complete cycle of refractories production from raw materials mining up to engineering and maintaining services. Magnezit Group includes production plants and service companies at the territory of Russia, China, Slovakia and Ukraine as well as a wide net of service and sale representatives. Using facilities of our production sites we create modern technological cycles to produce high-quality products that correspond to the highest world standards.
