The South Ural residents have organized the International Conference on Refractory and Metallurgy.

The XIVth International Conference on Refractory and Metallurgy has finished in Moscow. Magnezit Group was a co-organizer.

The Traditional Conference on Refractory and Metallurgy is considered to be one of the most famous and recognized scientific events in Russia in the field of refractories production and application. The Conference was held at the National University of Science and Technology «MISIS» (Moscow). Magnezit Group is the partner, among other organizers are «MISIS», «Materials and technologies of iron and steel industry» Technological Platform, «Functional nanomaterials» Ltd

More than 160 people took part in the Conference, representing 130 companies, scientific institutions and higher education establishments, including — delegates from Germany, Slovenia, Belgium, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Egypt and other countries. About 40 reports devoted to the most relevant topics of modern iron and steel industry and refractory industry were presented.

The Conference was opened by Mikhail Filonov, Pro-rector on science and innovations of «MISIS»: The topic of refractories is really important for us, as it dominates both the quality of the manufactured products and productivity of modern iron and steel plants. I am sure, it will be interesting for the audience to listen to their colleagues, learn about new achievements and technologies in the field of refractory development, manufacturing and application».

Lev Akselrod, Technical Director of Magnezit Group, was a member of the Organizing Committee. His report on «Competition in the steel and iron market is the driving force for the competition in the Russian refractory market» was the key issue at the Conference and created topics for discussion on the first day of the event.

At the Conference there was a report by Sergey Danilchenko, Senior specialist on refractory service in steelmaking industry of Magnezit Group, which was devoted to the Company’s role in the Russian refractory market. In particular, he described Group’s current production facilities and pointed out prospective «points of growth». «Unique raw materials form Siberian deposits and up-to-date processing technologies allow improving the whole range of our products and developing new high-grade materials. We named them Russian Magnezit and use them to produce refractories with superior characteristics», — said Mr. Danilchenko. «In general, reasonable combination of effective and reliable technical solutions together with their flexible application helps Magnezit Group to address almost all issues on improving efficiency and renovation of units of iron and steel, non-ferrous, cement and glass industries».

Another report presented by Tatyana Yarushina, expert of Magnezit Group, PhD in Technical Sciences, was related to wear factors and optimization of microstructure of magnesia-spinel refractories designed for RH-degasser linings. She reported that the results of simulation of thermomechanical processes that occur in the internal lining of nozzles show that under the conditions of temperature fluctuation influencing a dense lining (made of polished bricks) when temperature of working surface is varied between 1650–1700°Ñ during metal treatment up to 800–900°Ñ at the period between heats, thermal loads increase leading to local plastic destruction. «One of the methods to minimize thermal stress is to shorten the period between the lining preheating and the first heat, as well as to shorten the period between heats. Another method is to increase the compression strength and bending strength of the applied refractories in the working temperature range, — said the expert of Magnezit Group. Technology of impregnating bricks with solutions of magnesium and aluminum salts followed by thermal treatment was introduced, it helps to improve strength properties and minimize spalling of degasser nozzles at the preheating stage. Besides, reduction of permeable pores proportion prevents slag infiltration into refractory structure and interaction of slag phases with its matrix with formation of liquid calcium aluminates or solids such as MgO·Al2O3 spinel and 2CaO·SiO2 dicalcium silicate, with increase of density at the impregnated areas and further spalling during lining cooling at the period between heats».

In conclusion, Lev Akselerod, Technical Director of Magnezit Group, said: «The Conference was successful. There were representatives of main iron and steel companies, Academy of Science, teaching personnel of leading departments of Russian higher education institutions that train refractory experts. Special attention is to be drawn to the high level of most reports, simplicity of presentation and diversity of topics. Each participant of the Conference depending on his specialization could find interesting reports. It is one of the main goals of the Conference and I think it was achieved».

In addition, especially for the Conference and for the first time in the history Magnezit Group and co-organizers have established «Engineers of the Future» Competition, whose main goal is to find and support talented youth among students of specialist training facilities of higher vocational education, research and development establishments, manufacturing companies, to encourage their creative work and to promote the results of their research works in the science-intensive products market. The upper age limit of the participants is 35. There were about 10 research works on hot topics of modern iron and steel industry and refractory industry.

The jury has chosen two winners. Marina Senina, Ph. D., candidate of Department of chemical technology of ceramics and refractories of Dmitry Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia, was awarded for the work on corundum based substrates for selective membranes in sewage water treatment modules. The second winner is Bekzod Khaidarov, Ist category engineer of Department of Functional nanosystems and high-temperature materials, MISIS, with his work «Development of scientific and technical fundamentals of technology for the production of clinkerless mineral binding materials with usage of high-basicity slags». Senina and Khaidarov were awarded with «Engineers of the Future» Competition diplomas and memorable gifts.
